BC Vienna has added Barra Njie to its backcourt. The 25-year-old Swedish national team point guard arrives after three seasons in Germany with Basketball Löwen Braunschweig.
Njie, a 6-foot-3 point guard, produced his best numbers last season in the FIBA Europe Cup, averaging 11.2 points, 6.0 assists and 3.0 rebounds per game.
For head coach Dragan Bajić, however, those numbers tell only part of the story. “Barra stands out for his speed, explosiveness and ability to create in one-on-one situations,” Bajić said.
Njie’s impact is not limited to the offensive end. What he brings defensively matters just as much to Bajić. “His defense is especially important to me,” the Bosnian added. “He can pick up the opposing ball handler full court. That will help us right away.”
FROM THE G LEAGUE TO GERMANY
Njie first broke through in his native Sweden with Fryshuset Basket Stockholm, earning Rookie of the Year honors in the country’s top division in 2020-21.
Later that year, the Delaware Blue Coats, the Philadelphia 76ers’ G League affiliate, selected Njie in the NBA G League Draft. After one season in Delaware and a stop with Spanish second-division club Iraurgi SB, he joined Germany’s Basketball Bundesliga in the summer of 2023.
REUNITED WITH SHERFIELD
Njie established himself during three seasons with the Lions in the BBL and emerged as one of the team’s emotional leaders. In his final season in Braunschweig, he shared the backcourt with Grant Sherfield. The two guards will now reunite in the Austrian capital.
“I’m really looking forward to my time at BC Vienna,” Njie said. “Former Vienna players have told me a lot of positive things about the club and the city. The level of play is high, and the club’s ambitions align with my own.”
Njie also brings experience on the international stage with Sweden. He appeared in all six of the national team’s games at FIBA EuroBasket 2025, averaging 7.7 points and 3.8 assists.
Njie believes the roster and new coaching staff have Vienna well positioned for the season ahead.
“Of course, every player wants to win every game,” he said. “With this coaching staff and the way the roster has been built, we are ready to represent BC Vienna the best way we can.”
