Rodney Gunn Jr., known as RJ Gunn, has joined BC Vienna for the 2026/27 season. The 26-year-old American arrives from German Bundesliga side SYNTAINICS MBC and becomes Vienna’s second new signing of the summer.
At 6-foot-7 and 227 pounds, Gunn brings considerable size and physicality to the forward positions.
Gunn is from the greater Columbia area in South Carolina. He began his college career at Lenoir-Rhyne University in 2017 and spent four seasons competing in NCAA Division II.
During his time with the Bears, he scored 1,183 points and earned First Team All-South Atlantic Conference honours twice.
In 2021, Gunn transferred to Duquesne University in NCAA Division I. During his final college season, he averaged 8.1 points and 3.4 rebounds in 21 minutes per game.
Away from the court, Gunn completed a bachelor’s degree in sport management before beginning a master’s programme in leadership.
BREAKTHROUGH IN BRATISLAVA
Gunn began his professional career in 2023 with LWD Basket Leeuwarden in the Dutch-Belgian BNXT League. He averaged 9.5 points and 4.3 rebounds across 28 games.
He spent the following summer with Corsarios Cartagena in Colombia before joining Inter Bratislava.
Gunn took on a major role in Slovakia, averaging 13.9 points and 7.4 rebounds in 48 domestic league appearances. He was particularly effective from long range, shooting 41.2 per cent from three-point territory.
The forward was also one of Inter’s leading players in the European North Basketball League. He averaged 15.7 points and 6.3 rebounds across 12 games and helped the club reach the semifinals.
Gunn raised his three-point percentage to 48.6 per cent in ENBL play. He led Inter with 20 points in an 88-83 home win over Bamberg.
FROM WEISSENFELS TO VIENNA
After his standout season in Bratislava, Gunn moved to Germany and joined Mitteldeutscher BC in the Basketball Bundesliga.
Following one year in Weissenfels, he will now continue his career with BC Vienna.
Head coach Dragan Bajić believes Gunn’s numbers from last season in the BBL do not fully reflect his ability.
His strong performances in Bratislava and his motivation to prove himself in the ABA League played a major role in Bajić’s assessment. The head coach also highlighted the forward’s character and suitability for the team.
“RJ is a very versatile player at the four,” said Bajić. “He is a very good shooter, can attack the basket and can also find solutions in the low post.
“He is also someone who will fit very well with our team as a person. I am convinced that he will be a major addition for us next season.”
Gunn is looking forward to his new challenge and is ready to contribute from the first day.
“I am excited to meet my new teammates, play with maximum effort and put on a great show for our fans.”
